"It's only a cartoon, dude!" This is one the most common replies from people who want to continue to use mascots like Chief Wahoo (image top left) and think there is "no harm" in it. Some even claim that Chief Illiniwek's dance was genuine and that he "was taught by a tribe", that he had permission from a tribe and was given the regalia by them. Their fantasies grow so wild that they actually start to believe them, just goig out of their way to try and justify what they do. In all the footage I have seen of powwows and other Indian dances I have so far never seen somersaults or any guy jumping up to touch his feet like Illiniwek did nor dance in any way barefooted.
