Relocations: Trail of Tears by Robert Lindneux

So if even in the highest ranks of the US government some individuals are still unaware of what the relationship between Washington and tribal governments is about, then I really feel that I will have no choice than to address this issue here and try to get rid of these misunderstadnings once and for all.

The history of the Indian reservations in America

But before discussing the truth about the reservation policy of today, let's first have a look at the history of reservations and how they actually came into being in the first place. When the first reservations were erected, somewhere around 1850, they were not called reservations yet, but enemy of war camps. You'll have to understand that at the time Indians were not considered American citizens, but enemies, not unlike those people held at Guantanimo Bay in Cuba. Even the women and children were classed as enemies and locked up in these reservations. I deliberately say locked up because they were not allowed to leave the reservation. US army forts had to see to this and they were built closeby reservations.
