David Pieterszoon de Vries (1593 - 1662)
David Pieterszoon de Vries was a navigator from the Dutch village of Hoorn. There is a long story to tell about his encounter with pirates in Greece, his voyages to Newfoundland and to France, his buying and selling of ships, etc, but that is not really of importance in this particular article. What is is important to mention is that he met with the two Dutch tyrants Willem Kieft and Peter Stuyvesant, both governors of the New Netherlands and that he was the one who witnessed the massacres against the Indians and in his disgust of it, decided to write a detailed eye-witness account of it.
